Senior Energy Modeling Engineer

We are looking for a full-time Senior Energy Modeling Engineer to join our Richmond office. The position reports to our Principal / Chief Operating Officer. This role plays a critical part in ensuring Thompson Consulting Engineers delivers high-performing, energy-efficient building designs. The Senior Energy Modeling Engineer will directly influence system selection, design decisions, and energy performance outcomes across the firm’s projects.
Purpose – We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Senior Energy Modeling Engineer to support the firm’s growing portfolio of commercial building projects. This role will focus primarily on whole-building energy modeling, energy performance analysis, and supporting project teams with data-driven recommendations that improve efficiency and performance. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical modeling expertise with practical knowledge of commercial mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. This individual will work collaboratively with internal design teams to evaluate system performance, identify energy-saving opportunities, and support sustainable design initiatives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Energy Modeling & Analysis
1. Develop and execute whole-building energy models for commercial and institutional projects.
2. Utilize industry-standard software including:
a. HAP
b. eQuest
c. EnergyPro
d. Cove
e. or comparable programs
3. Analyze simulation results to assess system performance, energy consumption, and cost implications.
4. Perform comparative modeling to evaluate HVAC system options, envelope performance, and efficiency strategies.
5. Prepare clear, comprehensive reports summarizing modeling methodology, assumptions, and results.
6. Support energy code compliance documentation (IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, etc.).
Design Team Collaboration
1. Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers throughout the design process.
2. Translate energy modeling results into actionable design recommendations.
3. Identify energy conservation measures (ECMs) and value engineering opportunities.
4. Participate in design meetings and project coordination sessions.
5. Assist project managers in communicating energy performance findings to clients.
Sustainability & Certification Support
1. Support project teams pursuing LEED certification by assisting with energy modeling credits and documentation.
2. Provide technical input for Green Globes and other sustainability initiatives.
3. Collaborate with architects and consultants to ensure energy-related documentation is accurate and complete.
CORE COMPETENCIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred).
Demonstrated proficiency with:
1. HAP
2. eQuest
3. EnergyPro
4. Cove
5. or similar industry-standard energy modeling software.
Practical knowledge of commercial building:
1. HVAC systems
2. Electrical systems
3. Plumbing systems
4. Building envelope performance
Familiarity with LEED requirements and energy credit documentation.
Working knowledge of Green Globes or other green certification programs.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation preferred.
LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) preferred.
Experience performing energy modeling for commercial or institutional projects.
Familiarity with utility incentive programs or energy rebate documentation.
