Overview

The Virginia Peninsula Community College Mary T. Christian Theatre project involved the reconstruction and modernization of the theater within Templin Hall following a significant structural failure. The project restored a critical performing arts venue while integrating new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems to support modern theatrical production, audience comfort, and building performance. The design prioritized acoustics, lighting, ventilation, and system reliability, delivering a state-of-the-art facility that supports both educational programming and community events.

Challenges

  • Replacing and integrating MEP systems within an existing structure following a roof collapse and significant building damage.
  • Coordinating specialized systems required for theatrical performance, including stage lighting, controls, and audiovisual infrastructure.
  • Designing HVAC systems to accommodate both audience comfort and the unique ventilation needs of performance spaces.
  • Working within existing building constraints while upgrading systems to meet current codes and performance expectations.

Goals

  • Provide high-performance HVAC systems to ensure occupant comfort, proper ventilation, and acoustic sensitivity within the theater.
  • Deliver advanced electrical infrastructure to support theatrical lighting, sound systems, and production equipment.
  • Improve overall energy efficiency and system reliability through modernized MEP design.
  • Ensure all systems met current safety codes while supporting the long-term functionality of the facility.
